Founded in 1954 by a group of Unitarian parishioners, CHYC was created to provide African American boys with opportunities to fellowship and participate in structured physical activities that were not offered to them. Several years later, CHYC welcomed women and became the first dual gender recreation center in Washington, DC. Since its inception CHYC staff and supporters have worked tirelessly to provide youth ages five to 24 with opportunities to advance both academically and socially. Over the past several years, CHYC has helped champion the vast problems facing our young people.
